Review #13: Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass is one of the best games I’ve ever played. This isn’t even slightly an understatement, this game is about as close to flawless as I’ve seen in this medium. But I guess I should probably elaborate. This game follows Jimmy and his family as they attempt to defeat the Pulsating Mass, a large mass of… well, uh. Pulsating… stuff… You know what I’m trying to say. So basically, the plot is, go stop it. It gets more complex as it goes along and there’s a lot of interesting subtext, but for a lot of the game the story kinda takes a backseat, at least compared to other excruciatingly long RPGs. Oh yeah, this game is 40 hours. Nice. I’m not gonna discuss the plot further, as it’s really well done and I think you should just experience it yourself.
The combat takes up a lot of the playtime, and unlike other games like OFF, Space Funeral, or Omori, the combat is actually good. It’s very challenging and requires a lot of thought, especially in some of the later bosses. The game has an ungodly amount of secret areas, bosses, and quests that all provide a great amount of challenge and reward. This game honestly has some of the best combat I’ve seen in an RPG, which is surprising, as RPG Maker games are known for usually having really crappy combat. The writing in this game is excellent. Every NPC, even the most minor ones, still have really great dialogue, and as I previously mentioned, the story is really great. It’s also really funny, which is pretty cool. The art in the game is also great. It goes from super light wholesome stuff to extremely disturbing stuff very well while still retaining the artstyle it’s going for. The same can be said for the music, which is sometimes really catchy and nice to listen to, and sometimes absolute nightmare fuel. So basically, everything in this game is good and I don’t have any complaints. It’s like $15 on Steam and is well worth the price, so go buy it. Uh. That’s the end of this. Bye.
